The Apple Car might be under development in Germany. But Daimler and BMW won’t be helping out.
German business publication Handelsblatt reported on Wednesday that Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler and BMW terminated talks with Apple surrounding the development of the so-called “iCar“.
Sources said the talks with both German car makers collapsed over the key questions of who would lead the project and, above all, which company would have ownership of the data.
Since Apple wants its cloud computing to play a big role in the iCar, the companies could not agree on who would own data collected by the vehicle, according to the report. The German car makers are reportedly more protective of customer data than the Silicon Valley-based tech giant.
